First Loves

It only seems fitting for a first post to tell the tale of where it all began – a little beauty nostalgia, if you will …

I was handed down my first strawberry Chap Stick as a youngin’. A questionable ‘beauty product’ I know, but lip balm that smells and tastes like candy – and the closest thing I got to it in my sugar-deprived childhood – it was love at first application. Who knew a little wind-up tube of berry-flavoured petroleum jelly could bring so much joy to my 10 year-old self? To this day, I still reach for my trusty Chap Stick over any other to smooth over dry, cracked lips. And yes, I still sniff it like a manic junkie when I pop the cap.

Being a little cosmetically challenged, it wasn’t until well into my high-school years that I decided to amp up the ‘au natural’ (i.e. completely bare faced) beauty look I had going on with this gem: Maybelline’s Full ‘N Soft Mascara. A product that could transform my previously non-existent lash line into voluminous, perfectly defined, glossy black lashes? Mind. Blown!  Believe me, this string of favorable adjectives doesn’t do it justice. A slick of this baby on my lashes, and I all of a sudden I looked … female? Awake, in the midst of my sleep-deprived teenage years? Even now, as a fully-fledged beauty addict, mascara is the go-to product in my make-up bag and despite many a flirtation with other mascaras (one of my favorite products to road test, if you must know…), I always keep one of these on hand.

So although these may not be the most luxurious, ‘top shelf’-worthy products, like all first loves, they always hold a place in your heart – or bathroom vanity.

Tell me - what are your first beauty loves?
